Since noon August 8, another 35 third-country migrants who have tried to cross the state border illegally have been recorded on the Latvian border, said Kristīne Pētersone, a spokeswoman for the State Border Guard. She said that proceedings were still pending, but that most of these immigrants could be from Iraq. One group of about seven illegal immigrants has also been intercepted.

Persons who have crossed the state border illegally have been detained in accordance with the procedures specified in the Immigration Law and placed in accommodation centres for detained foreigners. Petersone said that a total of 133 people, most of them Iraqi citizens, are currently being detained illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border.

It has already been reported that 38 third-world nationals who tried to cross the state border illegally were detained at the Latvian border on Saturday until noon, but five people who had crossed the border illegally were detained on Friday evening.
Assessing the situation in Lithuania, as well as taking into account the growing risks on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, enhanced border surveillance had already been introduced and the resources of the State Border Guard and the Army for green border surveillance had been mobilized. Support is also provided by four ‘experts’ from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) and Minister of the Interior Marija Golubeva (For Development / For) announced that Latvia plans to accelerate the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border infrastructure and attract additional army forces to its security.
If the State Border Guard decided to come with a call to declare the State of Emergency on the Latvian-Belarusian border, then Golubeva would also be ready to address the government with such a call. Source
